Twenty people rescued after a Nairobi-bound bus catches fire
A total of twenty individuals were saved when a bus they were on experienced a fire incident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Makueni County.
According to Joseph Ole Napeiyan, the Eastern regional police commander, the bus, which was heading from Mombasa to Nairobi, caught fire in the early hours of Monday morning at the Kanga area within Tsavo National Park.
The event at 1:00 am was reported to the Mtito Andei police station as a vehicle fire involving a passenger bus. Napeiyan stated that no injuries occurred during the incident, highlighting that all passengers were safely evacuated from the burning bus.
Additionally, their belongings were successfully recovered, ensuring that everyone on board was fully accounted for.
“It was reported by other motorists at about 1.00 am that there was a vehicle which was on fire along Nairobi-Mombasa highway at Kanga area within Tsavo National Park,” Napeiyan told the Star by phone on Monday.
“Our officers responded and established that motor vehicle registration, a PSV bus was moving from Mombasa direction headed to Nairobi with 20 passengers on board before it got burnt completely after it caught fire from the rear wheel tyre.
“There were no reported injuries while all luggage among other personal belongings was salvaged.”
The police chief mentioned that prompt arrangements were made for another bus, allowing all passengers to continue their journey to Nairobi with the same bus company.
He added that investigations have been initiated to determine the actual cause of the fire.
