Security officers succesifuly repel al Shabaab attack in Garissa
Security personnel at Bohole 5 in the Hagadera refugee camp successfully repelled an attack by alleged al-Shabaab militants on Saturday morning.
Acting County Commissioner Solomon Chesut confirmed the incident, stating that individuals believed to be affiliated with al-Shabaab launched RPGs into the camp.
According to Chesut, this prompted the security officers to react, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire between the officers and the militants.
“I can confirm that there was an attempted attack on our security officers but they are always alert and managed to overpower them,” said Chesut.
The County Commissioner further mentioned that security agencies have increased their efforts in the vicinity and have enlisted the support of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) for aerial surveillance assistance.
In previous instances, militants exploited the rainy season to carry out attacks specifically aimed at security agencies in Northeastern, Lamu, and the areas surrounding Boni Forest.
There were also reports, although unconfirmed, suggesting that the assailants attempted attacks in Jambele but were repelled by the security forces in that locality.
Fafi Member of Parliament Salah Yakub criticized the government for not taking action based on intelligence to safeguard civilians and security officers in the line of duty.
The MP emphasized that deploying the National Police Reservists could effectively address and eliminate the threat posed by al-Shabaab.
“This is pure negligence from the government and my fear is that we might lose the entire area to al-Shabaab; we have been asking the government to recruit more police reservists but it hasn’t acted,” he said.
