Prof. Kindiki Sworn in as Kenya’s Third Deputy President as Ruto blasts Gachagua
Prof. Kithure Kindiki has officially assumed office as the third Deputy President of Kenya under the 2010 Constitution. He was sworn in at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, with Chief Justice Martha Koome presiding over the event.
In compliance with the Assumption of Office Act, Kindiki took two oaths: the oath of allegiance and the oath of due execution of the office of Deputy President. The event began shortly before 11 a.m.
Formal Oath Signing
After taking the oaths, Kindiki approached the ceremonial table, where he signed the documents, affirming his commitment to fulfilling his duties in line with the law.
The Chief Justice then received and countersigned the oaths. Court officials added the Chief Justice’s seal before transferring the oaths to the Attorney General for safekeeping.
Handover of the Constitution
The Chief Registrar of the Judiciary invited President William Ruto to the stage to hand over the Constitution of Kenya to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
The ceremony concluded with a photo session that included President Ruto, Deputy President Kindiki, Chief Justice Koome, the First Lady, and Kindiki’s spouse.
A Leadership Transition
Kindiki takes over from Rigathi Gachagua, who was impeached by Parliament for gross constitutional violations.
Following the impeachment, President William Ruto launched a subtle critique of Gachagua during Kindiki’s swearing-in ceremony.
President Ruto’s Address
President Ruto, in a spirited speech at the ceremony, voiced his frustrations about feeling isolated within the Executive over the past two years.
He lamented the lack of support in communicating his administration’s programs effectively, noting how he had often felt like a “lonely voice” advocating for his government’s agenda.
Expectations from the New Deputy President
Ruto addressed Kindiki directly, expressing his admiration for Kindiki’s intellect and communication skills. He highlighted the need for Kindiki’s support in clearly articulating the government’s plans and initiatives.
The President expressed confidence in Kindiki, emphasizing that he was counting on him to fill the communication gap that had existed. Ruto noted the crucial role Kindiki was expected to play in assisting the Cabinet in presenting the administration’s work to the public.
Insight into the Fallout
For the first time, Ruto hinted at the reasons behind his strained relationship with Gachagua, implying that the lack of effective communication and support from his former deputy played a significant role in the impeachment.
