Bungoma Leaders Ask Govt to Grant Departed Politician Lawrence Sifuna State Burial

Bungoma officials are urging the government to provide a dignified state funeral for Lawrence Sifuna, the former Bungoma South MP (now Kanduyi), as a gesture of acknowledging his contribution to the second liberation.

On Sunday, December 3, Sifuna passed away at an Eldoret hospital while receiving treatment for a stroke.

Regional leaders, spearheaded by Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, are advocating for the late former lawmaker to receive a state burial as a tribute to his significant contributions to the fight for multi-party democracy in Kenya.

“Lawrence Sifuna, like all our Liberation heroes who fought for the democracy and rights that we enjoy should be celebrated and honoured. We urge the President to give this legend of ours a befitting State Funeral in memory of his legacy as a member of the bearded sisters, selfless leadership and laying the foundation for Bumula and Kanduyi constituencies,” said Wamboka.

Former MPs John Munyasia and Wafula Wamunyinyi, who serves as the Deputy Party Leader of DAP-K, along with some Azimio MCAs from Bungoma, expressed similar sentiments supporting the call for a state burial while visiting the family of the late politician.

The leaders paid tribute to Sifuna, describing him as a selfless and brave leader who played a pivotal role in establishing the foundation for the present Kanduyi and Bumula constituencies.

They highlighted his contributions to Kenya’s democracy, particularly through his involvement in the renowned bearded sister’s group. The leaders urged current leaders to uphold his legacy by standing firmly with the electorate.

Expressing solidarity in grief, they pledged to support the family in ensuring a fitting farewell for the departed. Sifuna is survived by three widows—Mepher, Rufina, and Monica. Notably, he is also the uncle of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

As previously mentioned, the Nairobi Senator disclosed that the former MP experienced a stroke, leading to his prompt hospitalization, and unfortunately, he passed away during the course of treatment.

“Hon. Lawrence Sifuna, former MP Kanduyi and Bumula Constituencies, left us last night whilst receiving treatment at an Eldoret Hospital following a stroke he suffered a few days ago. As a Family we are grateful for all the messages of love that we continue to receive. May God Bless you all,” Sifuna said.
